DATES FOR THE CALENDAR

June 6: Potluck Lunch and Face-painting at Playgroup

June 14: CHEVERLY DAY!

June 19: Pool Party

LETTER FROM THE COORDINATOR

Despite all of this rain, CPRC had a great May: the Spring Fling and the Day of Indulgence and Pampering were both wonderful events. Still coming up are the playgroup potluck lunch on June 6th; the Bake Sale at Cheverly Day on June 14th; and the annual Pool Party on June 19th. See articles later in Newsline for more details.

Cheverly Day this year is on June 14th. For those who are new to Cheverly, this is a wonderful town-wide event. Be sure to come out for a great day and night filled with friends, fun & games, food, and fireworks. Newsline includes an abbreviated guide to Cheverly Day, highlighting the events that are of special interest to the little ones. But be sure to watch for your complete guide to Cheverly Day, which will be an insert in the regular Cheverly Newsletter.

I am very pleased to introduce CPRC's new lead coordinator. Welcome, Geneva Harris! Geneva has lived in Cheverly for three years with her husband Leonard W Harris, almost-5 year old son Leonard W (LJ), 3-year old daughter Jeannetta Janae (Jade), and 2-year old daughter Aisha Lennae. She also has an 11-year old stepdaughter, Essence Patrice Moore. LJ attends Cheverly Weekday Nursery (CWN) and JP Hoyer. Jade attends CWN. LJ will begin Kindergarten at St. Ambrose in the fall. Geneva and Leonard are happy, proud, and loving parents who of course want the best opportunities for their children. Geneva looks forward to becoming lead coordinator of CPRC, and sees it as an opportunity to learn more about positive parenting and positive networking with all the great parents here in Cheverly.

CPRC takes the summer off; no events are held during July or August. The 2003-2004 CPRC year will kick off with a planning meeting in late August or early September. Watch your e-mail for an announcement of the date and time for the meeting.

I am not saying good-bye to CPRC. I will be at playgroups and will doubtless be involved in particular events. But after two years as coordinator (and a few other CPRC posts before that), it is time to reallocate my volunteer time to my older daughter's school and other pursuits. Through my involvement in CPRC these seven years, I have made countless friends and have had wonderful experiences. I have watched Ann Marie's early friendships bloom, and I am watching Kimberly and the current gaggle of 2-year olds learn the joys of friendship. I want to thank all of the people who have been involved in CPRC, past and present. Cheverly is a great place for families in large part because of all of you. It's been a great ride. Thank you!

EXPRESSING APPRECIATION!

When you attend events like the School Information Workshop or the Child Safety Workshop or Spring Fling, remember that CPRC parent(s) gave their time to organize that event. Thank you to all of the people who helped to organize events this year. You know who you are, there are too many of you to name individually. Thank you also to those who opened up their homes for potluck dinners.

The following folks are stepping down from their CPRC posts. Thank you for giving your time and expertise to our organization!

- Jennifer Allegro was our Newsline Editor for two years.

- Donna Brown was Playgroup Coordinator.

- Melanie Hartwig-Davis was Welcome Basket Coordinator.

- Tanya Marshall has been our Webmaster for two years.

- Laurel Suor was Welcome Basket Coordinator.

- Randy ZuWallack has been our Database Coordinator for two years.

WHAT A DIP!

The Day of Indulgence and Pampering (DIP) was attended by ten Cheverly moms. We enjoyed foot spas and facials, and exchanged foot rubs. We breathed through about an hour of yoga and celebrated our work by eating plates of chocolate (ok, we had other stuff, too). It was really a beautiful celebration of leisure - unstructured time to just read a book, paint your toenails, or just sit in a chair and stare out the window. People brought books to share and magazines and massage and relaxation tools. The call for another DIP (the sooner the better) has already gone out. And next time, it needs to be 10am-10pm! Many thanks to the ten of us who shared the day.

CRPC POOL PARTY!

The annual CPRC pool party will be held on Thursday, June 19, from 6 pm to 9 pm. Please hold the date and join us for a family-oriented potluck dinner to celebrate the end of yet another terrific year for the CPRC. After 6 pm it will be $1 per person for those who are not members of the pool. Please bring your own meat to grill, and the following dishes depending on the first letter of your surnames:

A – F      pasta dishes

G – L       vegetable dishes (eg potato salad, green salad, casseroles)

M – R     appetizers/chips/snacks

S – Z       dessert

If you are interested in helping in any way, please let Suzy Rosen Singleton know via e-mail at suzyrs@yahoo.com or by telephone 301/773-9034 (e-mail is preferred if possible). An Evite has been sent out with this same information. We look forward to seeing you there!

A CHEVERLY HOUSE AND GARDEN TOUR

Need that extra deadline to get that house-do list completed? Think your home and/or garden offers some ideas to your neighbors? Consider entering it into the 2004 Cheverly House and Garden Tour. Preparations are beginning for this wonderful, community building event next April. Why a whole year away, you ask? We want to give you plenty of time to work on that kitchen renovation, patch that wall, or plant those bulbs. So, check out that to-do list. If you are interested in opening up you house or yard, let us know. Also, if you would like to participate by assisting in the Tour, just drop us an e-mail or call to add your name to the list at hd.squared@verizon.net, or 301/386-5387. This function typically makes a reasonable amount of money. If you have any ideas on how/what the CPRC can do with the funds to benefit the community, let us hear that as well! Thanks, Melanie Hartwig-Davis.

CHEVERLY DAY BAKE SALE

We will once again have a Bake Sale at Cheverly Day! We are still looking for volunteers to bake and/or work at the table for one hour intervals on the day of the event. Please contact Sue McElroy if you would like to bake or work the table, 301/341-3497 misssusans@yahoo.com

SPRING FLING NEWS

Our Spring Fling went off this year without a hitch!! We had over 50 people and lots of pot luck yummies! We had a blustery but sunny day, made crafts, played with Play Doh, and had balloon and egg tosses. Those balloons just wouldn't break on the sand!! Everyone enjoyed meeting up at Town Park and Pavilion and exchanging ideas about how to make Cheverly a better place for us all!! Mr. Beaudry taught everyone how to make musical instruments and the rest was organized by Tracy Hartmann. Many babies and some very new newcomers were welcomed. Hope you can make it next year!!

CHEVERLY DAY IS COMING SOON!

Volunteers are still needed. If you can spare an hour during the day and have not yet signed up to help, please contact Bill Stringer at wstring@comcast.net or 301/386-3782, or Tanya Marshall at tanyazu@earthlink.net or 301/322-4025. Helping out is a great way to contribute to the community and it is also a lot of fun!

There is still time to sign up to play in the East-vs-West softball game. If you are on the East side of town (Cheverly Ave is the dividing line; the community center is on the East side), contact Cindy Popol at 301/559-3254 or lcpopol@mdonline.net. If you are on the West side, you can reach Mike Callahan at 301-772-3197 or michael.callahan@wcom.com.

PLAYGROUP NEWS

By Tammie Nelson-Stringer

There is a playgroup potluck lunch on June 6th, 11:30-1:30. Don't miss the fun, including the bubble machine and facepainting! If you aren't already responding via evite, please give Tammie a call at 386-3782.

The potluck lunch will be the last official playgroup date until September. However, we have a few questions for you before we "sign off”. Cindy and I will distribute these questions via e-mail; if you aren't on e-mail and want to register your opinion, please call Cindy at 559-3254. (1) Would you be interested in some summer playgroup dates? (2) Do you like the current playgroup time (10:30 - 12:30) or would you prefer a different time?

It has been a great year for playgroup. We now regularly have at least 10 babies and children at each session. We have established an e-mail distribution list that has 35 members. We have had crafts at several playgroups and had a wonderful holiday party. We collected food for distribution to local families in need, and decorated cards for someone who was ill. We enjoyed our storytimes and our playgroups at the JP Hoyer Parent Resource Room. We shared many a fishie and pretzel between us. And we finally had bubbles at playgroup one day in May when the sun broke through the clouds. The babies are growing up, the toddlers are learning to share (well, sometimes), and we have some big kids who will be going off to school in September (sniff, sniff). And all the moms and dads have become great friends. Thank you to all the designated parents who take responsibility for one playgroup a month. And thanks to Donna Brown who was our playgroup coordinator for the first half of the year and led the very fun arts & crafts. And a big welcome to Cindy Popol who will be the new playgroup coordinator. Have a great summer! See you 'round the playground or maybe at the baby pool!

WE WILL MISS TANYA & RANDY!

Tanya Marshall and Randy ZuWallack have been an integral part of CPRC since June 2001. Tanya has been our Webmaster and Randy has been our Membership Database Coordinator. Tanya and Jack have been regulars at playgroup, and we were all happy to welcome Reid and Cole to the CPRC family in August 2002. And of course, we wouldn't have Cheverly Day this year if it wasn't for Tanya. We are very sad to report that they will be moving to Vermont during the summer. Cheverly and CPRC will truly miss this wonderful family!

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS

* - Linda and Ritzer Cruz welcomed their baby boy on April 30th. Ritzer Cruz weighed in at 10 lbs 4 oz!
